Let’s go public

On the 21st of October, Lead and Be Led’s final cohort of young people hosted a social action project after completing their leadership training. The Let’s Go Public event aimed to target young people who may not be aware of opportunities to participate in public service and senior leadership progression routes.

Let’s Go Public consisted of intimate discussions between our guests, panellists and young people on various important topics. Panel speakers included, Jan Parnell, Assistant Director of Education for Hammersmith & Fulham, Adam Matan OBE, Director of the Anti-Tribalism Movement, Asha Mohamed, a former beneficiary of ATM’S Leadership programme and Kauser Fadal, Litigation Paralegal at Waterfords Solicitors and a former beneficiary of the ATM Fellowship programme.

The event took place at Imperial College’s Invention Rooms and opened with a Privilege Walk – an activity which explored inequalities individuals based on their protected characteristics. This was followed by a breakout session where our young people analysed the effects of the lack of BME youth voices in society, specifically within areas such as housing, education, criminal justice, business and NHS.

Our young leaders were adamant to inspire and spark motivation amongst their peers using the leadership skills that they had developed and was recognised and rewarded through the 2019 Young Leaders Award. The conversations were incredibly stimulating and our young attendees had plenty of questions on how to get involved.

I left the Let’s Go Public event feeling confident in understanding the different opportunities available around me. It was fun and refreshing to hear from other young people that I am more than capable to achieve my goals and I enjoyed being able to network with young professionals the most.’  Muna Haji-Abdi, Volunteer.
