ATM Young Leader Recognised at Local Awards

The Anti-Tribalism Movement was present at the Hammersmith and Fulham Youth Achievement Awards which took place yesterday on the 26th February at St. Johns Church in Hammersmith.

Three people from our organisation were shortlisted for a number of awards. Sagal Bafo was shortlisted for Outstanding Community Contribution; Sakaria Hassan was shortlisted for Young Leader and Neimo Askar for Young Artist.

Sakaria Hassan won big as he took home the Young Leader award. Sakaria has continued to display a strong commitment to his community in his local area. Sakaria is a beneficiary of our Lead and Be Led programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund. Sakaria ran his own show on Universal TV called the “Youth Show” where Sakaria discussed current issues faced by young Somalis in the UK – particularly in London.

The show aimed to highlight and find solutions to these issues as well as promote positive role models. Sakaria is also a SYFI Ambassador (Somali Youth for Integrity) and has recently been campaigning and fundraising for improved maternal health in Somalia.

Sakaria said:

“I am really happy that I won this award. I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without getting involved in my local community and support from ATM. Congratulations to all the other young people who won awards too.”

Adam Matan, Director of the Anti-Tribalism Movement said:

“I am extremely proud of all of our young people who were nominated and won awards last night at the Hammersmith and Fulham Youth Achievement Awards. Young people continue to make this borough a better place to live with their hard work. Thank you to the Young Hammersmith and Fulham Foundation for putting together a fantastic ceremony.”

Here is an excerpt from the poem that Neimo Askar performed at the Achievement Awards which perfectly sums up the essence of the evening:

“Here is to us and the doubts we’ve had about our future,

Here is to us and our 2am twitter thread on which anime is the best,

Here is us and everything that terrifies us – but we overcome it,

We will be everything we have dreamt to be and more,

Here is us becoming the role models we aspire to be…

Here is to us.”
