African Union Announces AMISOM Exit Strategy

African Union Announces AMISOM Exit Strategy
African forces in Somalia are expected to start withdrawing from Somalia in October 2018. The complete withdrawal of AMISOM forces is scheduled to end by December 2020, according to the African Peace and Security Council.
AU’s Peace and Security Council has noted the indicative timelines of AMISOM exit strategy presented by the AU commission, which prioritizes territorial recovery and consolidation by AMISOM and Somali National Security Forces (SNSF) until October 2018, and the subsequent transfer of security responsibilities to the SNSF from 2018 to December 2020.
The African Union has also asked the UN Security Council to lift an arms embargo it imposed on Somalia until November 2016. In its communique, the AU Peace and Security Council underlined that lifting the arms embargo will be a critical aspect of building capable Somalia security institutions.
