‘If you even dream of beating me you’d better wake up and apologize.’
Mohammad Ali, 1942 – 2016
Welcome Cinema + Kitchen takes on 2018 with a fight as we return January 31st with a screening of Oscar-winning boxing documentary WHEN WE WERE KINGS.
This beautifully realised film integrates sports, racial politics, African-American musical performances, celebrity testimony, and the singular iconic personality of Muhammad Ali. Rumble in the Jungle and the build-up to the legendary fight in Zaire is surprising, inspiring and entertaining.
‘One of the best and most emotionally affecting documentaries ever made.’ ★★★★★ Empire magazine.
After the screening, we will be joined by Ramla Ali, the first female, British, Muslim boxing champion. Future Olympiad and former child refugee, Somali born Ramla will be sharing with us her journey and reflecting on the film. Take a look at the trailer for an upcoming documentary about her life.
The evening begins with Welcome Kitchen’s now infamous supper club. Dishes from Africa to Asia make up a ‘world food plate’ lovingly prepared by this team of friends. Meet the chefs and make friends with the other guests. We promise you will be talking about it for weeks.
