Somali Week Festival 2017

Somali Week Festival 2017:

Home and Displacement.

Kayd Somali Arts and Culture are delighted to present Somali Week Festival 2017 (#SWF2017), in collaboration with its partners. This year’s festival will run from Friday 20th October to Sunday 29th October at Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, London, E2 6HG and at a range of venues across central London.

Home and Displacement are the themes we have chosen to explore in this year’s Festival, placing it at the heart of contemporary debates about forced migration, mobility, and integration, against a backdrop of tightening border controls and rising xenophobia. What do they mean in particular for Somali people who reach across the world as the Diaspora continues to expand? And while many people are displaced by devastating natural disasters and ongoing political and economic instability, others are returning home, drawn by signs of lasting stability in the Horn.

The psychological, cultural, social, political and economic imperatives and consequences of migration inspire artistic expression and academic research in equal measure, as shown in this year’s dynamic and diverse program. We invite you to join us for performances, talks, and presentations by inspiring, insightful thinkers and practitioners working on these issues and to contribute to the many discussions that we will be holding through the week.

Kayd is proud and delighted to present artists from across genres and generations to come together and discuss their perspectives on these themes. Our revered and inspiring guests, including poets, writers, academics, community activists, playwrights and of course musicians, will be joining us from around the UK and from across the globe.
